Strasser backs People’s Party coalition with Greens
VIENNA. People’s Party (VP) Interior Minister Ernst Strasser has called a black-green coalition an absolute possibility, giving the clearest indication so far that the VP is prepared to form a coalition with the Green Party after the next election on 24 November.

Strasser said the Greens shared the same structure of values as the VP, making a coalition with them an interesting option. Signalling a shift in coalition preferences, Strasser said that he was sceptical about the merits of reviving a coalition with the Freedom Party (FP).

If the FP continues to develop along these lines, I don’t see any way of pushing forward our modernisation programme with them, he said. Strasser’s comments come as several other leading members of the VP have also said that the FP is unfit for government.

VP Upper Austrian Governor Josef Puehringer said that FP Carinthian Governor Joerg Haider’s growing influence over the party ruled out any possibility of the VP working with them. VP Governor of Tyrol Herwig Van Staa also said that Haider had disqualified himself as a coalition candidate by his tasteless criticism of VP Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel.

Haider had said that he would no longer be prepared to sit at the same table as Schuessel.
